Abstract
AUTOMATIC seedling transplanters have been under development for more than 20 years by various individuals and groups. With the exception of the Japanese rice transplanters, no particular automatic machine has been widely accepted by growers. Thus, a need still exists for a successful automatic transplanter design. Generally, automatic transplanters transfer seedlings from a source of supply to a planting mechanism via a feeder mechanism. This paper describes a laboratory bench model of a new feeder mechanism for free-cell seedlings. It transferred 90% of the seedlings at a rate of 30 to 60/min. Both the percentage successfully transfered and the rate of transfer will need to be increased for a successful field machine.
