Abstract

Summary Rabbits were fed for 6 months a semipurified, cholesterol-free diet known to be hyperlipidemic and atherosclerotic. One group was fed the semipurified diet alone, and another was fed the same diet augmented with 1% egg yolk lecithin. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels were similar in the two groups, but phospholipids and the α/β lipoprotein cholesterol ratio were elevated in the rabbits fed lecithin. Liver lipid levels were not significantly different in the two groups. Levels of aortic atherosclerosis were identical. Lecithin as 1% of the diet, had no effect on atherosclerosis in this model.
