Abstract
This chapter presents a measurement-based performance assessment of voice over IP in long term evolution (LTE) networks for suburban and rural applications. The behavior of the embedded eNodeB quality of service (QoS) aware scheduler is evaluated when different LTE configurations of QoS and cell conditions are taken into consideration. Our results suggest that the aforementioned scheduler maintains VoIP quality using guaranteed bit rate (GBR) with concurrent traffic over default bearer or even over non-GBR dedicated bearer. The QoS aware algorithm works in such a fashion that the mean opinion score remains constant even in adverse conditions, for instance, under concurrent traffic delay increase conditions, or in the presence of signal reception degradation due to changes in the terminal position within the cell.
