Abstract

In studying the means of assessing efficacy of vaccination against parainfluenza type 3 (PI3) virus infection of the ruminant respiratory tract, experimental models have been developed in specific pathogen free (SPF) lambs. Exposure of SPF lambs to an aerosol of PI3 virus has been shown to result in the mild clinical signs of a transient nasal discharge which was observed in lambs excreting virus. Protection against the clinicalsigns and virus excretion due to this challenge was obtained by prior intranasal instillation or intramuscular injection of live PI3 virus. Prior administration of inactivated PI3 virus by the same routes was not effective. However, it was shown that if the inactivated PI3 virus antigen was incorporated in adjuvant and given intramuscularly, protection could be achieved.
