Abstract
Accurate and stable time synchronization is crucial for the reliable operation of monitoring, protection and control systems in smart grids. As an alternative to GPS-based time synchronization of Phasor Measurement Units over a wide area network, this paper investigates the performance of Precision Time Protocol (PTP). After introducing time synchronization requirements in power systems and exploring the main vulnerabilities, experimental results related to a test PTP architecture are presented, in order to assess its feasibility.
