Abstract

The footprint method developed by Coodelle has been improved to measure the load distribution in a roller bearing. The new test procedure consists of cleaning the surface film in the non-contact areas after a plate or a ring of the bearing has recorded the footprints. The etched film in the non-contact area is removed easily. In this way the influence of the film thickness on real contact width is minimized, so that, a treated footprint can be analyzed like a real contact area. The simplicity makes the improved method more practical in the study of contact phenomena and the design, of the roller bearing system. Two different housings with different loading positions were used in the test of a roller bearing. The test results indicate that adequate design of housing can improve the load distribution in the bearing.
