Abstract

The purpose of the present work is to develop an accumulation heat exchanger model for residential heating fire-places and investigate the influence of the geometry of the device, as well as of its internal channel, on the flow characteristics and the temperature distribution of the exhaust gases. Temperature distribution on the external surface and internal sections is evaluated to observe the variation of heating in different areas of the heat storage system and the exhaust gas stream. To carry out the analysis, the numerical commercial solver Ansys CFX was used and, after validating the results through experimental investigations, different configurations of the system were analyzed. The proposed system allows to increase the overall efficiency of the biomass stove by around 35%, since it reduces the stack loss as part of the energy dispersed with exhaust gases.
