Abstract

Abstract This article revealed the fabrication of hybrid composites containing epoxy resin reinforced with corbon fiber and filled with granite powder. Filled composites are fabricated with incorporation of 0, 8, 16 and 24 wt% granite powder by keeping 40 wt% glass fiber loading constant. It further investigated slurry erosion wear behavior using Slurry Jet Erosion Tribometer (DUCOM TR-411) of these composites and presents a comparative study. The steady state analysis according to ASTM G-73 for erosion revealed positive effect of both the reinforcement. In case of unfilled epoxy composites, irrespective of impingement angle the slurry erosion resistance is significantly improved for reinforcement of fiber. Maximum resistance to slurry erosion wear is observed at lower impingement angle (i.e 30 and 45°) for all granite powder filled carbon epoxy composites. Reduction of slurry erosion rate observed is significant for impact velocity higher than 20 m/s. The maximum reduction in slurry erosion rate is reported for addition of granite powder from 8 to 16 wt%. The trend of slutty erosion rate predicted with finite element method is in agreement with experimental results.
