Abstract

AbstractThe present work is aimed at establishing an engineering design method for fretting fatigue based on experimental and computational investigation of dovetail structures made of nickel‐based superalloy. Severe stress gradients and surface wear damage make fretting fatigue difficult to be assessed based on conventional fatigue life models. With the help of detailed experimental investigations and finite element computations, a fretting fatigue life model based on the nominal pressure on the dovetail contact surfaces was related to the nonlocal multiaxial fatigue analysis. The derived fretting design method based on the nominal pressure shows a life prediction distribution within the double‐scatter band and agrees with experiments fairly well. The present model provides an efficient and easy‐to‐use design method for engineering applications.
