Abstract

The pressure dependency of nearly equimolar deuterium–tritium mixtures also in the presence of the inert diluent helium on the signal of a small 4.6 cm 3 volume ionization chamber was investigated experimentally and some of the results compared with theoretical calculations. The ion recombination factor that best fits the results was found to be 5.9×10 −6 cm 3 ions −1 s −1, a value higher than previously reported in the literature. The performed modeling is considered to be of general value for the design optimization of ionization chambers.
