Abstract

In the development of future launch vehicles, use of plug nozzle looks promising because of its altitude adaptive capability. Unlike the conventional nozzles exhibiting relatively simple flow physics, the plug nozzles are characterized by rich flow physics involving wave interactions and base flows. A better understanding of the flow features in plug nozzle flow field is essential. To move a step forward in this direction, experiments have been conducted on linear plug nozzle. Here, studies have been made on both full‐length and 20% length plug nozzles. To understand the flow field, pressure measurements have been made on the surface of the plug and on the base, in case of truncated plug. Experiments have been conducted for pressure ratios ranging from 10 to 65 and analyzed. The experiments conducted would be a good validation source for computational analysis.
