Abstract

Besides the context of l’affaire, which is imbedded in the history of medical research, the author also engages with de Sade’s key writings for a comprehensive analysis. It becomes apparent that the discourse indeed anticipates central, rhetorical elements of the debate on vivisection in the 19th century. Yet these elements merely function as a discursive medium: For it is not the ethics of medicine but those of the Marquis that are negotiated.
