Experiential learning methods for interpersonal skills training

Abstract

A wide variety of learning methods have evolved, often out of the humanistic approach to the field, that have come to be known as experiential learning methods. All of these methods focus on the student or learner being offered an experience, followed by the reflection and the making sense of that experience, which was described in Chapter 1. In this chapter some of those methods are examined critically, and practical suggestions are offered for their use in interpersonal skills training. The methods differ from more traditional teaching methods (which usually involve some sort of ‘telling’ on the part of the teacher). Experiential learning methods all honour principles of experiential learning discussed in the previous chapter.
