Abstract

This chapter focuses on a unique form of family therapy and family art therapy that is “not based on intellectual understanding, but rather upon an interactive process, metaphorical language, and personal interaction” (Keith, 1982, p. 331). Experiential family therapy is a branch of family therapy treatment that was developed in the 1950s and 1960s. The tenets of both existential therapy and humanistic psychology exerted significant influence on the theoretical orientation of this form of family therapy. Additionally, the use of the expressive therapies to augment the family therapy process was introduced with the work of Kwiatkowska (1967).
