Abstract
Oedipus Rex, the stories from Greek mythology, and books from the Bible such as Genesis, Exodus, and the Gospels have enduring significance. The trick is to enable high-school students to see this, to make meaning of their readings for themselves. I provide experiences which call upon the students to recreate the texts, in the tradition of John Dewey's approach to art. Dewey (1934, Art as Experience, New York: Putnam) said,
