Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of women who choose to continue to express milk after a perinatal loss, for donation to a nonprofit milk bank governed by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). Secretory activation–onset of copious milk production occurs in women after birth, even if the neonate does not survive. There is some evidence that milk donation after perinatal loss may help women grieve and find meaning in their experience. A deeper understanding of the psychological and physical experiences of bereaved women who express and donate their milk is necessary for nurses to provide quality care for these women.
