Abstract
This newly published book contains the results of a longitudinal study of unmarried mothers who keep their first-born child. It reports on the findings of 3 1/2 years of research, on more than 250 cases. Little information has accumulated in this country on the characteristics of unmarried mothers and their problems in keeping the child. The report indicates how these unwed mothers differ from the total group of unwed mothers and from those who surrender their out-of-wedlock child for adoption. Background data on age, ethnic characteristics, religion, education, and family situation in childhood are compared among the groups. Descriptive experiences of these unwed mothers in taking care of themselves and their infants are also included.
