Abstract

Objective To understand the experiences of spouse accompanied delivery in primiparas, and to explore the perceptions and needs in order to provide evidences of improving the quality of spouse accompanied delivery. Methods Qualitative method was applied to this study and the data of 14 eligible spouses of the primiparas were collected from the depth interviews. Then the data were analyzed and refined using phenomenological method. Results The experiences of spouse accompanied delivery were concluded to four aspects: the acceptance of the spouse accompanied delivery mode; the desire of acquiring more knowledge and skills of delivery; the personalization and humanity of the choice of whom to be accompanied during the delivery needed further development; the good professional qualities but poor communication of the midwives. Conclusions The spouse accompanied delivery mode is highly accepted with positive experiences. However, the health education of the mode and the communication between midwives and spouses need to be further developed, in order to improve the quality of the delivery.
