Abstract

It is the purpose of this paper to relate the events and decisions involved in the design, implementation, maintenance, and evolution of the programming language 1.PAK and its successor 2.PAK. These two languages were developed at the University of Toronto and were intended to facilitate the programming tasks of Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers. To demonstrate that our experiences are not particular to 1.PAK and 2.PAK, the paper points out parallels to the experiences of two of the more prominent Al programming languages, PLANNER and CONNIVER.
