Abstract

Three male and three female licensed psychologists were interviewed about how their predoctoral internship supervision experiences contributed to their professional development. The qualitative findings highlighted the impact of the supervisors' interpersonal qualities on trainees' developmental experiences. Invested, affirming supervisors contributed to positive trainee growth, and critical, non-confirming supervisors caused significant emotional and developmental difficulty for the trainees. Most participants expressed disappointment that their supervisors had not taken enough time to emphasize their development as independent professionals. They also indicated that they would have benefited more had their supervisors helped them better prepare for future developmental challenges.
