Abstract

The experience with 257 cases of elective cholecystectomy done at King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh is presented. Male to female ratio of 1:4.7 was similar to Western experience, but the disease is affecting our Saudi females at significantly lower age. A high incidence of hepatitis was noted (7.7%) with a significant higher incidence in the males (17.7%). Bacteriobilia and wound infection incidence were similar to the International Standard. The increased morbidity noticed in cirrhotics was not different from that reported in western series.
