This paper summarizes the purpose and design philosophy of the Earthquake Load section of the Massachusetts State Building Code; it describes the requirements that have had a clear impact on the design of buildings and other structures in the Commonwealth, and specifically the Boston area; and it discusses the evolution of accepted standard engineering practice of earthquake design
