Abstract

A literature review was conducted on the experiences of childbirth from the father's perspective. Studies have shown that the presence of fathers during labour and delivery is valued. Hennenborn and Cogan (1975) noted that the father's presence reduced the pain suffered by the woman and Kennell (1987) indicated that increased involvement of the father at the birth fosters the development of future family bonds. However, studies also indicate that labour and delivery can be stressful event for expectant fathers, and that midwives do not recognize or meet many of their needs. Midwives have an important role in making the labour and birth experience a positive one for both mothers and fathers.
