Abstract

The mobile intensive care unit was called to 770 patients in Helsinki, of whom 85 were clinically dead. Of the 770, cardiopulmonary resuscitation was attempted in 77 cases, but only four survived long term, compared with 12 patients of the 175 previously treated in the hospital emergency room, but not by the mobile intensive care unit. The differences were not significant. Complications of treatment by the mobile unit were examined in 39 patients; of these six had multiple rib fractures, and three had a fractured sternum. There were no other complications.
