Abstract

James Howden have designed a 300 kW wind turbine specifically for use in isolated sites, with the first such machine being installed on Burgar Hill, Orkney. The Company were also responsible for supplying the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) with an American design of wind turbine; this is the 250 kW machine which has been installed at Carmarthen Bay, Wales. This paper outlines the design features of these two wind turbines and describes the difficulties encountered and the lessons learned in constructing and commissioning the machines.
