Abstract
At a meeting held in the Naval Ship Engineering Center, Philadelphia Division, in January and February 1967, the following were found to be the principal reasons for the 1200-psi-boiler problems:Introduction of a new type of boiler without a sufficient training program;lack of a sufficient supply parts backup;lack of adequate manuals and documentation;lack of sufficient auxiliary equipment to assist in boiler operation and maintenance, and lack of optimum design features. This paper describes the aforementioned problems and what has been and is being done to improve conditions. An extensive program is now underway to vastly improve overall boiler reliability and decrease maintenance requirements.
