Abstract
Various substituted 4-hydroxy-quinolin-2(1H)-ones were prepared in two steps via a multicomponent Ugi condensation followed by a Dieckmann cyclisation. The method was extended to the use of a convertible isonitrile to allow subsequent transformation of the amide functionality to the corresponding ester or carboxylic acid.
