Abstract

The revelation of wartime achievements raised hopes that the turbulence problem is close to a solution. The turbulence problem of the 1920s—the instability of laminar flow—had been solved for the flat plate (Blasius flow) and theoretically also for plane Poiseuille flow. The statistical theory of fully developed turbulence as elaborated by Kolmogorov and others had achieved remarkable success. In the 1950s, the first textbooks portrayed turbulence as a subject of research in its own right. In 1961, an international conference on turbulence signalled its impact mainly on atmospheric and geophysical applications.
