Abstract
The authors studied means of expanding the overwriting power margin, which is one of the important problems in overwriting technology using the magnetic field modulation method. The authors found that the method for installing the guard band using strong laser beam irradiation between record tracks is effective. When the authors chose the irradiation conditions properly, an overwriting power margin of +/-25% was obtained without damage even using a disk with a polycarbonate substrate.
