Abstract

Expansion fan is a fundamental solution in Compressible Fluid Mechanics and is an important simple wave. In this paper we show that, under some conditions, an expansion fan in the physical space (x, t) could remain as an expansion wave, degenerate to a linear wave, or be transformed into a compression wave in a moving and deformable frame (ξ, τ), including a forced (given) moving frame and passively (flow driven) moving frame. Hence the structure of simple waves depends on the choice of the frame. Conditions for avoiding the change of wave type are derived.
