Abstract

The alliance between Pharnakes and Chersonesos (IOSPE I2 402 = III3 103) dates from year 157 “as Pharnakes counts”. The Seleukid era would yield 155 BC, but this was never used in Pontos, which was not subject to the Seleukids. A date closer to the Pontic Peace (179 BC) provides a better context. Pharnakes was probably inspired by Sinope to adopt a Granikos era commemorating Mithradates of Kios’ recognition by Alexander (334 BC). However, around 158 BC, he began counting his dynastic era from 297/96 BC, when Mithradates Ktistes had established his rule in Kimiata. He thus may have been the model for the Bithynians.
