Abstract

In this symposium we will explore the expansive vocabulary and generative practices associated with the word “design,” through three presentations. We will discuss the importance of emphasizing design as action rather than design as thought. We will also present two case studies of the social dynamics involved in efforts to introduce design processes in two unusual social settings – inner city schools and the US Navy submarine community. In the two cases, we will explore how organizations and communities that adopt the language of design in novel ways are able to expand repertoires of generative activity.
