Abstract

This paper will discuss how computer-based assessment can help solve the problems of examination administration in an online learning environment. An instructor who is new to the online learning arena may attempt to take traditional classroom examinations and port them over to the online learning format using one of several methods. These methods will be discussed pointing out the issues that arise when they are used. The advancement of computer-based assessment can help solve the problem of assessing the knowledge of online learning students through examinations that can not be given in a centralized location such as a classroom. The advantages of computer-based assessment over traditional paper-based assessment will be explored as they relate to students, faculty, and administration. There are numerous computer-based assessment tools available as stand alone software or as part of courseware packages. An exploration of the testing features of one of those tools will illustrate and put into perspective several advantages of computer-based assessment.
