Abstract

Providers and payers are reexamining the traditional roles of health care professionals in efforts to reduce costs, maintain quality, and provide consumers with appropriate access to care. This study examined whether pharmacists should shift from their traditional dispensing functions to more non-traditional activities associated with medication management and other medical services. Respondents agree that there is a need to shift the functions of pharmacists away from those only associated with dispensing. In nearly all cases, pharmacists are interested in providing the professional advice and services included in this survey. This indicates a strong desire by pharmacists to adapt to the changing health care environment.
