Abstract
Within the UK the native bee is the European honeybee Apis mellifera and according to DEFRA it contributes £120-200 million to the UK economy through pollination, and a further £10-30 million per year through honey production. The UK industry is mainly run by enthusiastic amateurs, with DEFRA estimating 44,000 amateur beekeepers holding 247,000 colonies (or hives) and 300 commercial beekeepers with 40,000 colonies. The support within apiculture, is also run by enthusiastic professionals, who have an active interest in beekeeping, or who keep bees themselves. The amateur beekeeper can also be the limitation to the UK bee industry as no registration or mandatory training is required to start, although, the industry tends to self regulate through the local Beekeepers Associations.
