Abstract

African swine fever and porcine epidemic diarrhoea are two notifiable diseases of pigs that, thankfully, have not reached the UK. However the potential for an incursion of one of these diseases is very real, especially considering the global trade of pigs and pig meat and the movement of people and vehicles. This article highlights how veterinary practitioners can best support their pig-keeping clients to ensure their herds do not fall victim to either disease. The latest developments around the pig industry's commitments to reduce antibiotic use are also covered.
