Abstract
Background: Immune tolerance to infectious agents is a phenomenon in which tissues or cells exposed to bacterial products become less responsive to subsequent exposures, with decreased expression of pro-inflammatory mediators. Failure to demonstrate attenuation of inflammatory responses has been reported to result in various pathologic pregnancies including preterm labor. Our lab has previously demonstrated that repeated placental exposure to gram-negative bacteria will induce a tolerant phenotype.
