Abstract

A landmark discovery for exoplanets, is presented. It began with the PhD advisor, Michel Mayor who was an authority on analysing the spectrum of light coming from stars and developed CORAVEL, a type of spectrograph that could detect the shifts in a star's light caused by a nearby massive object. The new instrument, ELODIE, developed by a PhD student Didier Queloz that could discern changes in radial velocities and detect subtler stellar wobbles and giant planets. Queloz developed a computer program in an attempt to fit the data to support the exoplanet's existence. And Mayor and Queloz decided to present their results to Nature wherein many astronomers later admitted that they did not believe in Queloz discovery, not until David Charbonneau at Harvard University, saw a star's light dim as a planet crossed in front of it that the scientific tide turned.
