Abstract

Abstract A description is provided for Exobasidium vaccinii . Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: Vaccinium spp. DISEASE: Red leaf disease of Vaccinium spp. By mid summer the affected leaves drop but the infected plants produce a very small crop. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Britain, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, USSR (Leningrad, Bashkir, Minusinsk); Greenland, Canada (B.C., Quebec); USA (Maine, New York, Alaska). TRANSMISSION: By air-borne ascospores and conidia; usually only young leaves are infected. May also be systemic. Infection occurs by direct penetration of the cuticle and the mycelium spreads throughout the cortex and into the pith on infected stems.
