Abstract

AbstractCalculations showed that none of the existing road classifications on British road maps shows a useful correlation with the speeds at which one can expect to drive on the various classes of road. Criteria which take a subsidiary role in existing classifications have a better correlation than those which figure prominently. New classifications more closely related to speeds can be constructed using conventional criteria. They would not require any data collection, nor even measurements from maps. They would help the map reader to select not only the minimum time route but also the fuel-saving route or the scenic route.
