Abstract

Mr. W. Tait Kinnear and Mr. W. Anderson exhibited a number of Carboniferous crustacea from the beds exposed on the shore near Ardross Castle, Elie, Fife. The specimens exhibited, although numerous, only comprised two species— Paleocrangon sociale and Dithyrocaris glabra. Special attention was called to the numerous specimens of dithyrocaris exhibited, as it is a rare Carboniferous phyllopod. The beds in which the crustacea occur are marine, and of a rather fine texture. In certain parts they abound in beautiful specimens of Discina nitida and Lingula squamiformis. Although the exhibitors had spent a considerable amount of time in investigating the beds, they did not succeed in eliciting any new facts beyond those already known, except noting the occurrence of scorpion remains, and the finding of two beautiful specimens of Acanthodian fishes. These beds then agree with the famous crustacean beds near Langholm, in their marine nature and in the presence of scorpions, fishes, and marine mollusca, but differ widely from the latter in the entire want of variety in the number of species.
