Abstract

On diesel engines in particular, series production in both passenger and commercial vehicle sectors has long incorporated systems which introduce cooled exhaust gas into the charge air in order to lower peak combustion temperatures and thus significantly reduce NOx emissions. The following article uses two modified MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH diesel engines to illustrate how this exhaust gas recirculation technology (EGR) can be used in the off-highway sector for NOx reduction and as an economically sound means of meeting future emissions targets.
