Abstract

The exercise tolerance test (ETT) is widely used in the diagnosis and management of coronary heart disease (CHD). We know that early diagnosis and treatment of CHD improves long-term health and quality of life. The test is also used in the management of other conditions including arrhythmias and valvular heart disease, and is a standard test in the assessment of fitness for occupational drivers. Although no longer the firstline investigation for undiagnosed CHD, the ETT remains a useful investigation that can be performed quickly and safely without the need for expensive equipment. Results are available at the time of testing, which may be especially reassuring for the worried well. There are a number of contraindications to the use of this investigation, so patients must be carefully evaluated prior to and during testing. Communication of results to the patient and general practitioner is essential to ensure appropriate treatment.
