Abstract

Historically, clinicians generally advised patients with cancer to avoid physical activity. However, the evidence-based trend now is for health care and fitness professionals to prescribe adjunctive exercise tailored to specific cancer diagnoses and patients’ tolerance as they experience cancer symptoms and treatment side-effects. This article examines the supporting research on—and guidelines for—maximizing the benefits of exercise for improving health-related quality of life (QoL) and outcomes, and reducing the risk of recurrence for the growing number of patients who are surviving cancer.
