Abstract

Heart metabolism is predominantly aerobic, through fat oxidation. During ischemia, glycolytic metabolism is stimulated and contributes significantly to cardiac energy supply. Chronic training upregulates fat utilization and therefore contribute to cell survival during left ventricular (LV) remodeling post acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Purpose: To study the effect of exercise training prior to AMI on the activity of key enzymes involved in heart energy metabolism during LV remodeling. Methods: Rats (n=28) underwent 3 weeks of swimming exercise training (Ex), or remained sedentary (Sed).
