Abstract

In brief: Previously sedentary asthmatics increase their VO2 max after starting an exercise program, according to several studies. Also, several effective medications can prevent or ease bouts of exercise-induced asthma (EIA). Those susceptible to attacks may need to exercise in warm, moist air or change the duration of workouts and rest periods to help avoid attacks. Although the precise pathophysiology of EIA is still under discussion, most physicians agree it is related to respiratory water loss and airway cooling.
