Abstract

Specific exercises are widely used in the simulation based training environment as a major means for training students to combine their theory skills into practical skills. An intelligent training system can increase the individualised learning potential by tailoring simulation exercises. A framework for supporting individualised learning by designing exercises that suit the needs of the student is presented. Such an exercise based training approach is characterised by a cycle of four phases: training needs identification, exercise design, exercise execution and student performance evaluation. It can be applicable to a variety of training domains. An intelligent training system for air traffic controller (ATC) is described as an application of the general approach.
