Abstract

The legal rights of and participation parameters for transgender student‐athletes have been a newsworthy topic during the last year. At the national level, the Office for Civil Rights determined a policy of the high school athletic association in Connecticut violated Title IX because biologically male transgender student‐athletes were allowed to participate on the girls’ teams. In particular, the OCR determined the policy denied female student‐athletes certain benefits and opportunities such as greater success in athletic events, increased recognition for doing so, and winning championships, among other things.
