Abstract

Control of spontaneous emission in a cavity, often referred to as cavity quantum electrodynamics, is studied for the new system consisting of a microcavity radiation field and quantum well Wannier excitons. A frequency-domain normal mode (polariton) splitting and time-domain coupled mode (exciton-field) oscillation were directly observed in a coherent emission from such a coupled microcavity-exciton system. The oscillation period and normal mode splitting are independent of the pump intensity, which is in sharp contrast to an atomic vacuum Rabi oscillation and stems from the bosonic feature of quantum well excitons.
