Abstract

The problem of separation into relative and translational degrees of freedom of the motion of an electron and a hole in a degenerate band, first considered by Dresselhaus, is completely solved. The transformation from electron-hole variables into relative and translational variables is achieved by a linear transformation, which, by mixing valence subbands, eliminates all terms containing simultaneously the relative and the total momenta. The exciton masses are expressed explicitly in terms of the Luttinger band-structure parameters. Quantum-mechanical expression for the center of mass operator is also given.
